Van Life Greece

Van life in Greece is a stunning adventure, offering everything from coastal tranquillity to incredible archaeological sites. It’s the perfect destination for those chasing warmer weather, as the climate remains mild well into the later months of the year.

If you’re curious about our personal journey, how Greece both blessed us and challenged us, check out our detailed account of our Greek road trip!

Parking and Camping

Camping in Greece is hassle free. While some campsites started to close in mid October, there’s no need to worry. Many beachside restaurants allow you to park up in exchange for buying a meal or a drink. These spots often come equipped with basic facilities.

Free camping was also no issue for us from early September to November. It might be trickier during the summer months in popular coastal or tourist areas, but overall, Greece is incredibly van life friendly.

Driving in Greece

The roads in Greece can be hit or miss. While the major motorways and toll roads are generally well maintained, some smaller roads leave much to be desired. However, the slower pace gives you a chance to soak in the stunning scenery, which is absolutely everywhere.

Toll Roads
Toll roads are common, well built, and sometimes expensive, especially around Athens and Meteora. On the west side of Greece, heading towards the Peloponnese, toll costs were much lower.

Breakdowns
If you’ve been following our adventures, you’ll know we’re practically professionals at breaking down. Repairs in Greece were reasonably priced. Here’s what we paid:

  • €2,000 for a reconditioned gearbox and a new clutch

  • €500 for a new set of all-season tyres

Language Barrier

The language barrier in Greece isn’t much of an issue. Many Greeks speak English fluently, and some even speak German. For everything else, Google Translate and a game of charades work wonders.

Here are a few helpful phrases:

  • Hello: Γειά σας (Yia sas)

  • Thank you: Ευχαριστώ (Efharistó)

  • Goodbye: Αντίο (Adío)

Safety and Security

We never felt unsafe during our time in Greece. We often camped on beaches and even left the van unattended for hikes with no problems. As always, we took basic precautions, such as closing the curtains and keeping valuables out of sight.

Best Greek Destinations

We spent two months exploring Greece, and while we couldn’t see the entire country, we managed to visit some incredible spots. Here are our recommendations based on their charm, history, architecture, and overall experience:

Ioannina Area

  • Acheron Springs: Enjoy rubber dinghy rapids and crystal clear waters.

  • Dance of Zaloggo: A striking monument atop a hill, with stunning ocean views.

Lefkada

  • Gorgeous beaches and coastal drives.

Meteora

  • Mystical monasteries perched on dramatic rock formations—a must-see.

Larissa

  • A bustling city with vibrant nightlife and unique spots like a gritty barber shop.

Peloponnese

  • Ancient Olympia: Explore the birthplace of the Olympic Games.

  • Voidokilia Beach: A crescent-shaped bay surrounded by hilltop forts.

  • Kalamata: A lively city, even out of season.

  • Mystras: A captivating fortified town.

  • Sparta: Visit the statue and resting place of King Leonidas.

Mani Peninsula (Peloponnese)

  • Areopoli: Italian charm and breathtaking sunsets.

  • Limeni: A picturesque seaside village.

  • Vatheia: A ghost town of Greek ruins.

  • Cape Tainaron Lighthouse: The southernmost point of mainland Europe.

  • Gytheio: A vibrant city with plenty to explore.

  • Dimitrios Shipwreck: Perfect for snorkelling and sightseeing.

Bonus Spot

East of Thessaloniki, the “three peninsulas” (often called the Three Fingers or Three Legs) are stunning. This area is a dream for nature lovers, with coastal walks and free camping spots aplenty.

Friends on the Road

Even out of season, we met plenty of fellow travellers. The Three Legs area was particularly social, but many travellers we encountered were heading south to the Peloponnese for the winter.
